CALM - Crisis, Aggression, Limitation and Management

EDI endorses CALM & SAFE for Physical Intervention Training for Security Industry

A physical intervention programme to develop the trainers of door supervisors in accordance with new SIA standards has been endorsed by awarding body EDI. The CALM physical intervention trainer programme offered in conjunction with SAFE is designed to meet the requirements of the level 3 qualification due later this year.

Raymond Clarke, Managing Director of SAFE said “We believe that the strategic link between CALM and SAFE will radically transform the delivery of physical intervention training in the security industry. CALM has a global reputation as a leader in physical intervention training and uniquely in the security industry, subject their techniques to independent bio-mechanical assessment and publish data on injury rates. We believe that given the risks in this area of training, the low levels of injury evidenced by independent validation of the CALM system will be highly attractive to socially aware companies and training providers.”

Gareth Phillips, Business Development Director of EDI said: “We are delighted to endorse the CALM/SAFE product, which is the first to be endorsed by EDI. We are particularly pleased that companies with the reputation enjoyed by CALM and SAFE have chosen to work with EDI in gaining approval, which confirms the growing influence of EDI in the sector.”

The CALM and SAFE training materials will be available by the end of June. “We will be offering the programme on an annual license along with other SAFE materials, which will dramatically reduce cost to users whilst ensuring the highest production values typical associated with SAFE products” added Clarke.

BILD Reaccreditation

CALM Training has been an accredited training provider under the BILD accreditation scheme since its inception. We have recently undergone our 3 yearly re accreditation. The assessors report  in June 2009 on observed training - part of the re accreditation process - recorded the highest category in every section and in many areas it noted "exceeds expectation of  scheme."

Following attendance at the subsequent accreditation panel in June, CALM Training was once again re accredited with the panel commenting on the  overwhelmingly positive contribution made by CALM  to the wider restraint agenda.

CALM Quality Assurance Award

Successive national reports have highlighted the poor quality of care offered by some services supporting vulnerable service users who present challenging behaviour in the child care, education and adult learning disability sectors. The use of restrictive physical interventions remains a highly contentious and often misused area of practice.

The CALM training model is one of a small number of training organisations accredited under the national physical intervention scheme administered by the British Institute for Learning Disability (BILD). CALM has been acknowledged as achieving the greatest impact and safest results in several UK and US national level reports. However such results are dependent on a constructive relationship with user agencies, and their compliance with the strict underpinning quality assurance procedures. The CALM Quality Assurance Award was developed to recognise the efforts of those services fully compliant with the CALM and BILD Quality Assurance procedures.  Its award should be recognised as indicative of a commitment to best practice standards by awarded organisations.
