Associates scheme

The established Instructors programme allows user agencies to deliver the CALM physical intervention curriculum in house. Additionally, CALM theoretical programmes can be taught in house by staff completing the Associates programme. Associates will be supplied with a comprehensive training pack to enable the development of customised in house training programmes.

In our view "one size fits all", packaged  training programmes delivered on a cascade model are not always effective. In house trainers are often expected to deliver a "script" developed by a training provider.  Where the content of the programme is problematic, or the programme fails to meet the reality of participant needs, the credibility of the trainers and the training programme can be compromised.

A key aim of the CALM Associate scheme is to ensure that in house trainers develop a familiarity with the available research evidence on aggression management. This promotes an in depth knowledge of key practice issues, which enables Associate trainers to respond knowledgeably and sensitively to the concerns of course participants.  This approach also enables Associates to design credible customised training courses which meet the needs of specific agencies which are delivered with confidence and clarity. Consequently the Associate scheme programme involves direct teaching, presentation skills, reading of key research papers and formal assessment. Agencies accredited under the scheme are then eligible to purchase a comprehensive training pack, which can be customised and delivered to the needs of the agency.
